Geeks on Gadgets, Games and Tech: May 2016

My husband and I have a 7 month old who is, like most babies, a handful. Inbetween working and looking after the baby, our flat was starting to look like a bomb site. Before we had our baby, when we had money to spend, we decorated our first home with the best furniture we could afford. I mean, we spent expecting the furniture to last us for a long time. I should also mention with our carefree, money burning lives we also bought two very expensive pedigree cats. After our baby the cats have kind of taken a back seat too. Once groomed, played with kittens are now lazy, fur balls who spend their awake time creating chaos. My husband attempts to change their litter daily but sometimes we skip a day. As long as they are fed, this is only temporary and I am sure they know it. We give them love when we can. However, the flat was getting so full of fluff our baby was starting to get fur in his poop. Obviously something had to be done, so we decided to get a cleaner.

Well, it started out ok. Cleaner didn't speak English at all but we managed and she did a passable job. It was clear she had no idea of modern day gadgets like dishwashers and cordless vacuum cleaners but through miming and a few key words we got by. Many things I just let go trying to explain as it was just too difficult. Vacuumed, dusted, polished, the flat was starting to resemble the beautiful home we once had. That is until yesterday. I managed to have a lie in with our baby and woke up at 7am. I had envisioned in my mind the brunch I would make my family, us sitting down to watch cooking shows in our pyjamas, our baby making shrieks of laughter at daddy attempting to feed him whilst I sipped a caffeinated fresh coffee, a luxury to a breastfeeding mother. Mind at ease that no cleaning had to be done today, I could enjoy a few moments of peace while my husband looked after our baby. That is until I saw the wet patch, an insignificant wet patch on my stylish velvet 3 seater sofa. I shouted at my husband asking if he spilt anything to which he confessed the cat pooed on the sofa. He revealed that during the night he found our cat's box turned the wrong way around so they couldn't get to the door. Realising instantly that our cleaner, cleaning the floor, must have turned the box around when she put it back. But that was Thursday afternoon this was Saturday morning! For those of you who haven't owned a cat or had one pee in your house let me explain, the smell isn't instant, it is one that slowly creeps up on you until you discover its existence. I marched back over to the sofa and it hits me, this thing stinks! I see wet patch is in fact a patch of pee. Ok, after the initial shock I remember that is what dry cleaners are for. So, packing baby into the car, we head for the nearest dry cleaners who explain that the stain won't come out, they can try to remove the smell but the cushion pad will need replacing. Ok, I think, let me phone the manufacturers. So, on the phone to the manufacturers they can replace the cushion but it will take up to 6 weeks! 6 weeks without one cushion pad. Fine I think, I mean I am angry at this point, it will cost a lot to replace, I feel like crying but it is fixable. So we go home and I can still smell it. It is the most identifiable smell once you know it is there. So I feel around the other cushion and I feel several more wet patches. At this point my day is ruined. My sofa, my beautiful sofa that we bought together. I never owned good quality furniture, my family never had nice things. I loved this sofa, I nurse my baby on it, my husband camps out on it, I spent my entire pregnancy on it. But, ok, I can buy another cushion pad, we just won't have a sofa for 6 weeks. So I get rid of the cushion. But I can still smell it. I find another one, this time on the back of the sofa, is another wet patch, and this time it can't be dry cleaned, it is the sofa itself. A £1100 sofa ruined. So after more anger from me and my husband, I calm down and take to our arm chair nursing my boy, having him sleep peacefully in my arms. I can still smell it. I pass the now crying baby to my husband and sniffing like crazy there it is, this time on a cushion, the stale, rancid stench of a desparate cat. Another one to the dry cleaners. So I decide to inspect our other cushions, the cushions we bought matching our sofa and again, I smell it. More pee!

So I am sitting here on my bed with my cats as we are out of living room furniture, wondering how on earth we are going to afford another couch. I feel kinda sorry for my cats but much more sorry for myself wishing we had never got that cleaner, wondering if that contents insurance we passed on would have covered it, and thinking how, in making life easier for ourselves has one simple mistake made such a hassle for us.

I just hope I don't find more pee...

PSA regarding windows 10

If, like me, your computer upgrades to windows 10 without permission there is a way to fix it. When you first log on you should see an end user licence agreement , simply decline the agreement and windows will prompt you to reinstall your previous version.

This incident occurred towards the end of last year and to date is the shittiest thing that has happened to me. As usual my mums cooking up a storm in the kitchen, fucking curry spice flying everywhere and chopping vegetables like a mad man. Just imagine inspector gadget with a cute ass pink apron. Note: My mum loves spicy shit. Anyway dinner gets served and being a male teenager, I absolutely fucking inhaled this green chicken curry, going back for 2nd's and even 3rd's. You can already see where this story is heading... A couple hours pass and it felt like Mount. Vesuvius just re-awoke and exploded from my asshole. I go to bed, feeling satisfied that I probably won’t need to shit for another month after that ordeal.

Next morning, I get to school late as usual. Walking on the path to the senior courtyard to drop my bags off I get a slight urge to fart. I think "fuck it, why not" and let it rip, thinking I flushed my whole system the previous night. But my god I have never been so wrong in my life. Before I could suck it back up, a warm substance was already wedged between my butt cheeks. In fear and desperation, I stood completely upright and froze in the middle of the path. Realising that my whole school career was in jeopardy, I threw my bags onto the bag rack and waddled as fast as I could to the men’s toilet. Just as I thought I was in the clear, I turned the corner to find my whole cohort in a senior meeting with the principal and about 10 other teachers. (Form teachers, Vice principals etc.) Me being the dumbass I am, forgot that there was a big senior meeting that morning. So here is this 6’1 guy, perched up like a meerkat clenching its ass. Shuffling his feet across the ground with the most halfassed, tensed and guilt written smile on his face, innocently walking in late to a senior meeting with 130 people. There was absolutely no escape after receiving what was scariest eye piercing stare I have ever received from the principal. What ensued was the most traumatizing and uncomfortable 15 minutes of my fucking life.

Thankfully, apart from looks of complete wonder and concern from my peers I bolted to the toilet ripping my underwear off. After assessing the damage, the chance of reusability was nil, I had to free-ball. However just to top of my luck on that fine morning, I happened to be wearing the shortest pants I owned, causing my genitalia to hang out the side when I sat down. Staring into my shit stained underwear in despair I just felt like crying. I thought about calling home but of course I left my phone in my room, just as my world was falling apart I remembered my buddy leaves his phone in his bag. I walked out of the toilet trying to act as if I hadn’t just spent 40 minutes furiously wiping my ass and having a mental breakdown. After doing a quick double look I shoved my underwear into the bin hoping no-one would notice a pair of shit covered underwear sitting in there. My mother being the saving grace she is and feeling slightly responsible for what happened, turned up with a new pair, handing them to from the car which looked nothing short of one of the shadiest drug deals ever. I then proceeded to have severe anxiety all day, thinking that someone might uncover my underwear.

If you didn’t pick it up this was in my SENIOR year of high school.

TL;DR: Ate way too much curry, shit my pants in my senior year

FYI: Reddit now rehosts all images that are posted as direct image links from Imgur.

I tried searching and didn't see anything calling this out, but I think it's worth calling attention to.

I noticed this browsing some NSFW content when I stumbled across a user's post history that contained some deleted submissions. The posts show as being posted by [deleted], and when I click on the submission link I am taken to the generic Imgur link for a deleted image: http://ift.tt/1eXCOwg However, when I click on "Full Comments (x)" I see the image previewed in the comments because it is rehosted on reddituploads.com I don't want to link to the exact example I stumbled upon because it's obvious this particular user no longer wants those images on the internet, but here is a random example I found on /r/nsfw. Notice it shows as submitted by [deleted] and when you click the content link you are taken to the "Image has been deleted" page on Imgur, however you still see the original image at the top of the comments because it is rehosted on reddituploads.

I thought this is worth calling attention to for users that may post some naughty pictures of themselves they later want removed as they will now need to contact Reddit to remove the pictures in addition to deleting them from Imgur. Especially since I am not aware of any way to remove the content from Reddituploads yourself.

I currently work as a Dev-Ops guy at a 30 person startup. I wanted to see what everyone had in their "Work-Stack".

I put on many hats in the course of my work-week. I use a small software suite to help manage my day-to day.

• https://trello.com : I plan everything in Trello. I found that executing a list helps me put my schedule on cruise control. I think Trello has the best UI in the planner category. It lets me shift items like cards, and make multiple pinterest style boards for my tasks.

Additionally it has tools to help you visualize where your "Call to Action" is. (which is basically the most important sentence in your email, and what you're asking of your reader.)

• https://freedom.to/ : Same idea as those sites that block popular time-waster/social sites. But this works on your phone. I use my phone to goof off way more nowadays so I appreciate this modern update to those social-site blocking apps.

My PS+ account was apparently hijacked and I have lost access to it. The hijacker racked up $300 of debt and got my account banned. After proving that I am the original owner of the account, I am now expected to pay off THE HIJACKER'S DEBT or else forfeit my remaining subscription (Details inside)

I originally posted this to PCMR, but given Sony's history with this sort of thing it's pretty clear the only way to get any kind of help or results is to cause the biggest stink possible and hope they respond to save face, so that's what I'm doing.

I apologize if this is a bit incoherent or something, but I am beyond frustrated right now. With Uncharted 4 being released, I actually had a use for my PS4, and I was very excited to play it. However, when I tried to log in to my PS+ account, I was told my password was incorrect. After trying every possible word + number combination I use for passwords (just a system I use so that I don't wind up using the same password for everything) I decided to bite the bullet and just reset it, despite knowing from past experiences that this is a pain in the ass on Playstation.

Whatever, I have to reset the password. Kind of annoying, but overall not a huge deal. I logged on to the website and put in my email to get password reset instructions sent to me, but I just keep getting an error message. Don't know why that was an issue, because when I used my PS4 to send the email it worked on the first attempt. Whatever, just a minor inconvenience. Annoying, but at the end of the day who cares, right? Anyways, I follow the password reset link they emailed me, enter in the information, and click "Next."

At this point I'm pretty frustrated, literally none of the systems in place have worked, and now I have to do a live chat with tech support just to try and reset my password. Again, at the end of the day, not a big deal. Is it inconvenient and annoying? Yeah, but it's not the end of the world.

So I submit my ticket and am told that my expected wait time is 30 minutes. Seemed kind of high to me, but there's not really anything I could do about it, so I just waited until I got the little notification ping that I was in chat. Once I was in the chat... Things just got worse. I won't give you a play-by-play of what was said in the chat, instead you can just read the whole thing by clicking here.

I probably come across as a little bit of a dickface in that, given that the actual issues at hand are out of the support operator's control; and I tried to keep from getting heated toward her (I know that it's no fun to get yelled at when there's nothing more you can do to help), but at this point I was pretty mad. Hell, I'm still pretty mad. That's the whole reason I'm writing this whole stupid thing up.

I don't really know what the point of my writing all this out was. I don't expect it to really get any attention or for anything to come of it, but maybe someone on here had a similar experience and can help me out. I just want to fucking play Uncharted.

This is why I play on PC. Steam support may be actual trash, but they've never held my account hostage without even allowing me to prove that the charges I'm being expected to pay are fraudulent.
