Wind is powering all of Iowa right now.
My Dad has worked at a coal plant in Iowa for decades. He called this morning and said that when he got to work the units were all off and that he could see that the entire state was off of coal and natural gas. He said that he was told that they might be off for months.
I couldn't find any news articles, but I think this is huge.

Day one DLC is fucking bullshit and I'm tired of it.
So. Lets start things off. I'm an Australian.
The worldwide consensus is that Australia has one of the slowest internet rates. (If facebook started to give third world countries internet it would be faster than the average Australian household I'm pretty damn sure).
Now, I'm forced to pay 100 AUD for new releases on X-BoNE and PS4. This feels pretty damn high partly because I'm a full time student. But you know what, I'll take it.
What I can't take is a god damn developer advertising their game before its released with additional DLC that you have to pay for. What the fuck. So you're telling me you already thought of additional content and your trying to fucking make me pay for something before its god damn released. ADD IT TO THE GAME YOU STINGEY CUNTS. IF I WANTED AN INCOMPLETE GAME I'D BUY FUCKING CALL OF DUTY.
How about I sell you a brand new car for 50k, then 2 days later I'll sell you the turbo that goes with it? Would you be MAD? How about you pay for a university degree and you pay extra for an addition requirement?
So I'm downloading pc games at 2 mb/s, I'm also paying $130-160 AUD for a full game. (120USD) FUCK YOU IF YOU DO THIS.
TLDR: FUCK DAY 1 DLC AND THE COMPANIES THAT DO IT.
Edit: Cheers to the guy that is downvoting all my comments

The first great war in 2 years has started in EVE Online [x-post r/games]
It's been just over 2 years since EVE ONLINE saw the largest online battle in video game history.
Since that day EVE has somewhat stagnated. . The winners, the CFC (now re-branded The Imperium) had secured their place as the only real super power and were untouchable. Whilst there were plenty of fights going on no one really believed we could ever see another battle on that scale again. There was no one who could challenge the Imperium.
That is until now!
This past week has seen almost all of the major alliances and many smaller ones go to war with the Imperium.
To understand what has sparked this i'd like to give you a little history of things that have happened in the game over the past 9 months.
-
CCP introduced a new system for capturing sovereignty The new system now allows guerilla like tactics to be used. Meaning sovereignty is no longer decided by who brings the biggest ships.
-
The Mittani's failed Kickstarter
The Mittani (leader of the Imperium) attempted to get a book published about the fountain war. This was met a with huge backlash from the rest of the eve community, esp, /r/Eve, who felt he was trying to monetize his alliance members. After this Imperium members were encouraged not to use /r/Eve thus closing themselves off.
-
High Profile Imperium members defect
Not liking the direction the Imperium was taking a number of former high profile FC's and spy's leave the Imperium and join rival alliances.
-
The 'I want isk' financial backing for war
The Final piece. The website 'i want isk' (think Iron bank) begins paying alliances to go to war with the Imperium after coalition member SMA fails to pay a bill and accuses IWI of illegal activity.
A write up can be found HERE
Also a guide to the new Allied force can be found HERE
This new Allied coalition (Moneybadger coalition) saw its first large scale victory on Wednesday night. Over 2000 players fought it out in the first real battle of this war. The final battle report can be seen HERE. It was a total victory and smashed the illusion of Imperium invincibility once and for all.
Since then the Moneybadgers haven't really lost a battle. Confidence is sky high and EVE is being spammed with propaganda messages urging Imperium pilots to defect, Such as THIS, THIS and THIS.
Then yesterday came the biggest surprise, the Mittani announced that two Imperium alliances (BASTION and LAWN) would be abandoning their territory and pushing deeper back into Imperium Sovereignty. Currently a Dunkirk style evacuation is taking place in the region of VALE OF THE SILENT.
For a visual represention, you can see the coalition map HERE and the alliance version HERE
SO WHY IS THIS WAR SO IMPORTANT?
The combination of the Imperium having to defend its home systems and 2 years of arms building by all sides means that this war has the potential to dwarf anything that EVE has seen before. Any of the skirmishes taking place right now could easily escalate into the largest battle in gaming history.
The entire EVE community is currently abuzz with excitement. This is the first great war in 2 years and its looking like something you will be reading about on gaming sites in the coming weeks.
If you have ever been curious about EVE or wanted to be part of a huge battle, NOW IS THE TIME TO JOIN!
The next few weeks could decide the future of EVE for years to come.

Apple is silent and the media isn't reporting on it but there are significant bugs affecting many people after they update their devices to iOS 9.3
Edit: 9.2.1 users are experiencing the same issues now. What the hell is going on?
For whatever reason, the media has ignored this story and, in true Apple fashion, Apple has been completely silent about these issues.
The issues do not appear to show up right after installing the 9.3 update and they have not been affecting every device equally. In my case, it took about a day for the issues to appear but others have taken up to two days. Some users only report battery draining issues while some, such as myself, report a catastrophic failure of the phone's ability to handle embedded permalinks, within apps and on websites.
To compile all of the issues, I created this "9.3 Bug Thread" in /r/iphone. Here are some of the issues that myself and many users are experiencing:
I created a couple GIFs to help visualize the hyperlink issue.
- GIF 1 - The end is when Safari freezes, after long pressing the link.
- GIF 2 - The disabling of Javascript helped us use Google again so that's why I included that in this GIF.
I also uploaded a Youtube video that shows me navigating around CNN.com
I have had an issue pretty consistently where I will be texting a friend with read receipts turned on, my message then shows its read but when I come back to the conversation "read at ___" is changed to "delivered". But on my Mac, the message still shows as having been read.
I recently upgraded to iOS 9.3 on my iPhone 6 and just started having issues this morning. Most notably, the majority of my apps run excruciatingly slow or freeze up. In Messages, I'm unable to send photos via SMS or via iMessage. When I attempt to, there's a little pinwheel that loads once I select a photo, then it pops back to the Message screen without actually loading a photo.
Safari Broken on iOS 9.3. No solution found yet. Resetting settings, cache or history does nothing. Disabling content blockers does nothing. Disabling javascript does nothing.
OK, so I installed the latest software update (9.3) yesterday and ever since, my wifi has been intermittent at best, and for the most part, doesn't work at all even though it says I have a connection/signal.
Anyone else experiencing this? I researched some online and tried resetting the network settings, and did a hard reboot and no dice. I have tried both a 2.4ghz and 5g connection, reset my modem and router, and still doesn't work.
Next step is going to revert back to 9.2.1.
I have 300 down and 30 up, but pull about 170mbps down and 22 up with pretty new modem and router. No problems with my iMac, macbook or all 3 of my PC's and laptop. Nor my PS4, XB1, or Sonos system. Just the iPhone since the update.
I keep getting logged out of Facebook, Instagram, alien blue... I turned my battery percentage on yesterday and today it's off. I think my iPhone is forgetting its settings... Anybody else reporting?
It may have something to do with the 9.3 update, but after the update my phone started charging slowly. I looked online and tried that toothpick thing to remove the dirt from the port, but that didn't work either. I'm using a third party charger by the way (that may also have something to do with it). Does anyone know the problem?
So on 9.2, when I plugged my iPhone 6 into my Kia's "iPod" USB, it would automatically scan for media and then start playing music or a podcast (if I had previously been playing a podcast). After updating to 9.3, this doesn't work. My car just charges through that USB port and doesn't recognize my device as a media device.
I've tested this in two cars with a similar setup (non-touchscreen interface USB iPod port), and in both cases, a phone on 9.2 will play media, and my phone on 9.3 will not.
I chatted with apple support via Twitter and we went through a ton of steps (reset all settings, fully reset the phone, etc), and nothing has worked. I had a call with a rep and they say that I probably need to bring my car to the dealer so they can update the car's firmware. This seems unnecessary. It's not a complex entertainment system, just a standard radio that has a USB port that used to be compatible with Apple products.
Is anyone else having double notification issues with iOS 9.3?
Outside of Reddit, there are multiple threads full of people with the same issues:
As you can see, the problems are wide ranging and significant. I guess that's why I made this post. The silence from Apple is disgusting so hopefully a post like this will encourage the media to light a fire under Apple's ass.

Shattered Skies - Game by WarZ devs. Please know who you are purchasing from.
Oh boy, we're at it again. The WarZ devs are releasing a new game. So this makes it, what, three games and one of those games was re-branded as a "new" game? If you want to include War. Inc, then that makes it four games. Three of them have been abandoned pretty much.
Just spreading awareness so no one buys this without knowing which company they are purchasing it from and their past.
Here's a post about the WarZ scam, and I'm sure you can find A LOT more: http://ift.tt/1Mr6ljh
Here's a link of the site of the game, and a forum post buy our favorite casting couch professional, Sergey Titov, along with his forum profile confirming his involvement with the game, yada yada:
Please remember to do your research before purchasing things! I'm by no means dissing the game itself, for all I know it might be the magnum opus of survival games -- but the company behind it has definitely done some scummy and shady things.

To our internet friends
Several years ago, I met a guy on Garry's Mod while playing TTT. He was complaining about not having anyone to play Dark Souls with, and I told him that I wanted to get that game so bad but I didn't have the money. This dude who I didn't even know and had only talked to for 20 minutes bought me the game as long as I played it with him.
We played that game daily over the summer and less often as the school year started. We eventually fell out of contact, until Dark Souls 2 came out. We talked and were nostalgic, but it didn't last. Recently, we started playing rocket league together from 8 pm to 2 am 2-3 times a week.
I found out recently he was diagnosed with cancer.
I told him that because he bought me Dark Souls so long ago that I would get him 3 and we'd beat it together.
Well I bought it for him, and he messaged me tonight wanting to return it. He didn't want me to waste my money because his doctor says he's going to pass soon.
I told him to keep it, we'll play it if he's still around when it comes out.
Even if you may never see them in person, the relationships you forge online are just as real and tangible as the ones you make face to face. Even if your parents and colleagues don't believe so.
I haven't had as many great times with someone as I had with this friend. If only I'd known earlier and hadn't fallen out of contact.

Uber's bug bounty program is a complete sham, specific evidence entailed.
So if you weren't aware Uber recently launched a bug bounty program. Basically paying security researchers to find bugs that pose a security risk. Now fast forward a couple days, the number one rated hacker on hackerone(site that crowd sources the bounty program) @meals reports that uber changed their scope page tweet once they rejected a bunch of bugs on a specific domain tweet in order to evade payout. This not only happened to the top hacker on hackerone but also myself. I reported a xss bug and this is the conversation screenshot Imgur. They ultimately closed my bug and reopened it STATING it was a new valid bug, then closed it again. They validated it was a bug and swindled me out of a payout. A billion dollar company refuses to pay for valid bugs. We are asking for fair treatment for the security work we do and no one is holding uber's feet to the fire.

Obligatory "Let's not start up on the merits of having AV software/having a particular brand of AV".
This is just me sharing some information.
So yeah, just noticed this shortcut appear out of nowhere on my desktop.
Following it back to it's folder - 'SZBrowser' subfolder in the main Avast install directory - I think it's had 'the stuff' on my machine for a couple of weeks (just from looking at dates and things) and only just decided to install.
Needless to say, I don't much appreciate this.
I've quite happily copped the increase in notifications about particular sales, and the inserting a signature into my e-mails wasn't particularly annoying (as I promptly disabled it), but this - installing something without telling me - isn't cool at all.

It's 2016. After explaining them for 25 years, I'm no longer willing to put up with non-technical people who don't "get" zip files.
As a technologist, I have been explaining zip files to non-technical people for nearly 30 years. About 80% of these people get it right away, and then move on with their lives. The other 20% just refuse. They insist on locking themselves into a technical adolescence in this ONE area for no reason other than "I don't want to learn one more thing."
Last night an admin person who works at the NCBTMB insisted that my wife's 52 continuing education certificates should be sent individually in 52 emails because the admin person refused to understand that she could double-click the zip and LIKE FUCKING MAGIC all the certificates would be there. Its bad enough that these ONLINE-ONLY exams do not automatically record pass or failure, forcing you you have to email totally forgeable certificates like it's the 3rd century. That there are incompetent boneheads on the other end of the email who are being paid to operate devices they BARELY understand has sent me over the edge.
Just in case I ever find myself needing to justify my position to these people, here's the analogy I'm going to use.
Why would anyone use a grocery cart at the grocery store?
Sure grocery carts have their use, but they do introduce a measure of complexity to shopping.
You go in the store, you get the thing you need, you pay for it at the register, and you take it to your car. Simple!
What if you need two things?
Well, you go in the store, you grab the two things, you pay for them at the register, and you take them to your car. Still simple simple simple!!
What if you need 12 things?
You make several trips!! You go in the store, you grab as much as you can carry, you pay for them at the register, you take them out to your car, then you go back in, grab more things, take them to the register, and so on and so on.
The beauty of this is that its so simple to understand. It's just picking things up and carrying them! Simple!
I'll tell you what it is ... its SOCIALLY FUCKING IRRESPONSIBLE. You're taking up space in the aisles. You're taking up space in the lines for the registers. You're wasting the cashier's time. You're taking up a parking spot way longer than you need to. Your poor family members who want to help you unload the car are affected too. They could bring in 3 or 4 bags, but instead they have to waste their Saturday making dozens of unnecessary trips back and forth to the car.
If avoiding grocery carts or grocery baskets or grocery bags ONLY affected grocery luddites I'd be fine with it, but it doesn't. It fucks up the world around them. It makes the lives of everyone around them a little worse. They're not Hitler, but their voluntary ignorance is enough that they increase the shittyness of the world. They're the double parker. They're the person who won't let someone into their lane. They're leaving the toilet seat up. They're having a four hour conversation in a crowded breakfast place when there's a coffee shop next door.
If the willfully ignorant want to have stupid passwords that only expose THEIR financial life, cool, whatever, but I'm putting my goddamn foot down on the zip file thing. Anyone who has used a grocery cart has ALL the mental capacity to understand what zip files are for, how they work, and how convenient they are for themselves and everyone around them.
I would already never hire anyone in any office position who couldn't create or open a zip file, but I pledge to actively embarrass these types of people in the future.

Goodbye, Internet Friend
Recently a friend of mine passed away very suddenly, someone I met online and unfortunately never met in real life. It's really hard to describe our relationship, but, to sum it up from my point of view, he really was the only best friend that I've ever had.
Now I'm not one for 'real life' friends much, I've had plenty of them, but the friendship usually felt kinda forced and I found myself bouncing between different circles of friends my entire life, never accepted by a group long enough to remain a part of that group.
Online friends however, I can't quite put it into words but I'm sure there's people out there who get it. They're unique, something you just can't replicate in 'real life'. And I was fortunate enough to meet such a special guy, someone who really made a big difference to my life without even knowing it.
We had so much in common, worked and studied in the same areas of IT, had all the same mannerisms, liked to go and do the same things outside of gaming too so we were always talking about our days and how they compared.
God I miss him so much. We talked every day, played pretty much every day, and it was all taken for granted. You really don't know what you have until you lose it.
It sucks that he's been taken away from me, I don't even know how to grieve considering no one I know gets how it feels to lose an Internet friend, they're all so different from me. Plus no one around where I live knew him, so it's not like I could just go have a beer with some guys and 'remember the good times' to help deal with this. I'm just sat at my PC, waiting for him to come online for one more game.
I can't even bring myself to remove him from my Steam friends, every time I see his offline status it breaks my heart. I just want him to come back on Teamspeak one more time, there's so much I wish I could have told him.
This experience has pretty much destroyed my whole passion for gaming and I don't know if it'll ever come back, but now I know for sure that I was never excited to come home and play games, I was excited to come home and talk with my best friend.
I don't even know why I'm posting this, I guess this is how I'm dealing with the whole grieving process, or just asking for advice from anyone else who's been in a similar situation, I don't know how to handle this by myself.
Goodbye, Internet friend <3

Edward Snowden Speaking at LibrePlanet 2016 "What Happened in 2013 Would Not Have Been Possible Without Free Software"
The first day of the conference was March 19, and it will be continuing tomorrow on the 20th.
It seems many on this subreddit are (justifiably) very pessimistic about the current state of technology, and how it relates to our human rights. I want to start this thread to let people know that we can emancipate our future if we work together. The progress that has already been made (indicated by the reference to foss in the title) proves this.
People need to know that there is, in fact, a choice. And IT does not necessarily doom us to totalitarianism.
