PSA : Intel Z170 Chipset may suffer from a design fault.

So I've been working at my local PC store and we've had 3 Z170 Motherboards fail over the last couple of weeks. One of the boards which failed was mine and all errors have been the same. When the PC has been running for a while and under heavy stress, such as maxing out CPU heavy games, the PC freezes and a force restart is required.

The strange thing is the error which is produced in the windows event log "Error ID 56,ACPI application error". Now this crashing occurs at seemingly random points when the system is under stress and has proven hard to replicate quickly however we did notice that by down-clocking the RAM and the CPU/RAM voltage the system was much more stable.

The problems have persisted between different brands. I myself was using an ASUS MAXIMUS HERO VIII and the other boards were Gigabyte and ASRock (i might have to double check that last one). To fix this issue we had to go to the H170 chipset. For most people and including myself this was okay as overclocking and SLI wasn't something we were too fussed about but for some customers those were key selling points of their build.

I'm just posting this now as a warning for people looking to upgrade or build. I've seen quite a few nice deals on Z170 board bundles but personally wouldn't risk it.

These links provide more information on the error:

I really don't mean this to be a boycott of the new Intel products, i'm sure there are still plenty of people who have Z170 boards and have been fine, this is just a warning for those looking for new builds and would rather be safe than sorry.
