TIFU by trying to save some veggies and filling my house with smoke

This happened tonight.

We came home from my parents' traditional family Easter egg hunt, spent the later evening with TV and Reddit. The last thing my wife did was to remember her food preparations for today in the kitchen. Leftover asparagus soup swimming in a cooking pot had to be cooked up daily so keep it edible for Easter Monday, thus switch on the stove, wait for it to heat up and switch it back off was the plan. But apparently bushing our teeth erased our memory and attention and we went to bed with a potentially deadly catastrophe about to unfold.

Easter Sunday was a perfect sunny day in Northern Germany. But suffering from allergies and not yet in full summer mode, we still sleep with closed windows.

Fast forward to 2am: I woke up coughing asthmatically and my sleepy me thought I was fighting my hay fever again. I couldn't really smell something because my nose was stuffed, worse than ever, I thought, trying to grab a water bottle next to my bed. I couldn't find it, coughing like crazy and actually breathing was burning in my lungs. I turned the bed side lamp on to find the room filled with dense smoke! Finally I switched to full alert and shouted my wife and my son to wake up and get tf out of bed immediately. Minutes later we are save and I have tossed the pot out the door and opened every window in the house. We went back to bed at about 3. But I could not really sleep anymore.

I kept myself alive by browsing Reddit and writing this for hours. And drink a whole liter of coffee.

Very annoying: The fucking smoke alert gadget didn't work. I guess over all those false alerts the battery finally died.

TIL soup can actually catch fire.

Any ideas of how to get rid of the disgusting smell of ashes?

tl;dr: Forgot a pot on the stove, kitchen fire smoked us out of bed.
