TIFU by locking myself and my newborn baby in the car in the middle of a hot day
Obligatory “this didn’t happen today” disclaimer. This happened a few years ago when my eldest was a baby and we were living in the Goldfields in Western Australia - think desert.
tl;dr at the end.
As first-time parents my husband and I were pretty useless with the car seat and constantly faffed about when we got the baby in and out. The car seat was in the centre of the backs and we always grabbed him from the rear passenger door as the buckle for the tether strap was on that side. After the baby was born there had been a few times we had gotten distracted and forgotten to lock the car thanks to the aforementioned faffing, so we started “pre-locking” the car with the remote as soon as we got out, even if a door was still open. Our car at the time (Hyundai Sonata) would allow this, and then once all doors closed it would arm the locks.
This solved the problem of accidentally leaving the car unlocked but I started to worry that we would accidentally lock the keys in the car, so I began dumping my gear on the boot (trunk), hitting the lock button, then attending to the baby. That way I knew the keys were safe outside the car and the car would be locked once I closed the door.
So on this one particular day I go out, grab some lunch on the way home, and roll up home around 1pm. It was mid-December, so not the height of summer, but it was definitely at least mid-30s (95F). For some reason, probably laziness, I open the rear driver’s side door to get the baby out instead of the rear passenger side, but can’t reach far enough over to loosen the side tether strap. I get onto my knees in the back seat to reach over and the door slightly shuts behind me. I awkwardly get the baby out and try to open the door and it won’t open. I figure I’ll just pull it all the way shut and then I’ll be able to open it. I pull the door shut and see the indicator (blinker) lights flash as the car arms itself.
I have a tiny moment of dread remembering that I’d locked the car with the remote, but figure I will just manually unlock the door and get out.
The lock won’t budge.
At this point I have a flashback to the scary advertisements on tv about how the heat in a locked car rises the most in the first five minutes so it’s never safe to leave your dog in the car and I look down at my 6-week old newborn and think, yeah you’re fucked. I then figure, well maybe it’s because I’m in the backseat, so I go-go gadget my short stumpy arms to reach the front door and that one won’t unlock either. I think, this is fine, this is fine, the central locking button surely will override this, I’ll hit that. But I can’t reach it so I dump the baby back into the seat, which at this point is a massive, unbudging obstacle of stress in my need to reach the central locking button as this enormous baby seat is blocking the gap between the front seats and I can’t reach the damn button from the side so I just rip out the head rest out of the driver’s seat and contort myself over the seat, jammed up against the roof, wriggling until I can finally reach the fucking button AND NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENS.
And at this point I accept that I am locked INSIDE the car with my baby in the hottest part of the day like a fucking idiot.
We lived in a complex of units so luckily for me I was parked in a shared lot, but there was no one around so I immediately start Bear Gryllsing this shit and figure, well I’m breastfeeding so he’s not immediately a goner – I’ve got wet wipes in the car, I’ll strip him down and blow air on him and let him suck every bit of moisture out of these nips and we’ll survive that first five minutes of pre-heating in this oven and I’ll figure out what the fuck I’ll do after that while we slow roast to death together. That was probably about 10 seconds of panic before I thought to beep the horn. Clearly being faced with imminent death all my senses super focused like a fucking genius mamma ninja and I had the presence of mind to remember that the night before a car alarm had gone off in the middle of the night which my husband and I had ignored so I thought, make the beeping random so that apathy towards car theft doesn’t keep people from coming to investigate. So I start riding the horn and then giving it short, sharp bursts and just descend into a hysterical horn blowing mad woman until finally the creepy neighbour we always see smoking out the front wanders out. I see him and frantically point to my keys that are sitting on the boot next to my bag of Hungry Jacks (Burger King) and he confusedly unlocks the car and I fall out thanking him and trying to swallow the urge to drop to the ground and kiss the burning bitumen ala Kevin Costner kissing the shore in Prince of Thieves so I just sort of try and explain what had happened but he just backs the fuck out of there and never looks me in the eye for the rest of the time we lived there.
Everyone I’ve told this story to says why didn’t you break a window? It didn’t even occur to me. Afterwards all I could think was thank FUCK it wasn’t my old car (Mitsubishi Mirage) – that car the horn didn’t work without the key!!
tl;dr: I inadvertently locked myself in the car with my newborn baby by opening the back door, pressing lock on the key remote, leaving the keys outside of the car, and accidentally closing the door behind me while I got my baby out, causing the car to lock and, unbeknownst to me, unable to be opened from the inside.

Switch to Firefox now, or forever be stuck in Google's embrace
As recent news has shown, Google has an outsized impact on the web. Without a meaningful competitive engine (which right now is only Gecko) there will be a future when Google is able to dictate what web technology they want to succeed and fail, and they will use that to increase their profits, without much care for the rest of the web.
The only way to combat this is to switch to Firefox. Fortunately it's easy to download (www.getfirefox.com) and easy to import your data from Chrome. Download it, use it and the less we use Chrome the less power we give Google over the internet.

Any form of threatening, harassing, or violence / physical harm towards anyone will result in a ban
We have posted this before, but this needs to be reiterated.
We understand that many of you are emotionally driven to discuss your feelings on recent events, most notably the repeal of Net Neutrality - however inciting violence towards others is never ok. It is upsetting that we even have to post this.
Do we enjoy banning people for these types of offences? No... Many of us feel as if the system has failed and want some form of repercussion. But threats of violence and harassment are not the answer here.
And to be clear - here are some examples of what will get you banned:
I hope this PoS dies in a car fire
I want to punch him in the face til his teeth fall out
And if you are trying to be slick by using this form
I never condone violence but...
I would never say he should die but...
Im not one to wish death upon but...
Let's keep the threads civil.
If you violate this rule, you will be banned for 30 days, no exceptions

TIFU by looking at medical insurance prices
This happened yesterday. I thought about posting this yesterday but decided it wasn't a FU worth reading... And then it got worse.
A little background: I'm financially... Careful (read I'm cheap). I get more enjoyment out of watching my bank account grow than I'll ever get out of any gizmo and gadget. If someone offered me $100k to live in a box, I'd consider it just to look at that new milestone number on my bank account. That being said, I had taken interest into a Health Savings Account after hearing about it. A retirement savings account that I can withdraw from penalty free for medical expenses? Brilliant.
Yesterday at work, I had small chunks of time free in between parts of work that required active effort. I used this time to Google "how to start an HSA". To my dismay, starting an HSA requires you to have medical insurance. I do not have medical insurance.
I am still very interested in starting an HSA however, so I decided to look at some ballpark quotes on what medical insurance would cost me to see if it was worth going through. I put in my info using an auto fill. Not paying attention, I allowed it to auto fill my real phone number.
Since doing this, I have received 53 calls. Of those, 10 are from the same number today. At this point, I'd much sooner die of cancer than have medical insurance.
TL:DR I wanted to look at health insurance prices and they responded by calling me 53 times in 2 days.
But why Sony?

I Fought Apple and Won! [x-post]
Originally posted to r/apple. Sharing the post to raise awareness to your rights as a consumer in Australia.
I purchased an iPhone XS in September of last year. The first week of December I accidentally dropped it in my sisters swimming pool at the shallow end - a depth of approximately 1.10m. Immediately, I jumped in an pulled the phone out, switched it off and let it dry for a few hours (as indicated in the steps of what to do when your phone gets wet on the Apple website). A few hours later I turned the phone back on and all was good. Fantastic!
A few weeks later, the Sunday before Christmas, my phone started bugging out restarting itself every 3-5 minutes. I restore it to an old backup from June 2018 to no avail, I restored it as a new iPhone which seemed to work.
Jump forward 4 days and it starts happening again. I go through the process once more. It seems to be working fine for now. I was at my parents place for a week over Christmas so I wasn’t able to get to an Apple store until around the 29th.
I went in and explained what happened to the genius tech, told her that it seems to be working fine now though. She agreed it may have just been a software issue, but made a case note so if it happened again then they would know it’s got a history.
Jump forward another 2 weeks and it starts happening again, this time worse. The restarting is less frequent, maybe once every 8 minutes, but the screen is flickering from bright green to dark green. I take it back to Apple and they say they need to open it up and see if there is any internal damage.
Two hours later I come back and they say the Liquid Contact Indicators have been activated, which means there is internal liquid damage and they won’t cover liquid damage under warranty.
I spoke with the store manager on duty for about 45 minutes because I disagreed with this policy given Phil Schiller, head of worldwide marketing for Apple, literally said you can drop it in the pool and it will be fine (jump to 40:40). It was not fine. This was the only time my phone had been in or near water.
I continued the conversation with the store duty manager and she said the best she can do is take 25% off the replacement handset price of AUD$800 (or close to it). I was not about to pay an additional $600 for my phone after paying $1600 for it not too long ago.
She gave me a few other options but the outcome of those would most likely be no replacement due to liquid damage.
I was completely honest with her and said “I understand this isn’t you making the policy, but I feel misled and like there is a bit of false advertising going on here. You can’t just make a statement and then choose not to cover it under warranty” she apologised again and I said that’s fine, I understand it’s not her. I told her I would be filing a complaint with NSW Fair Trading (consumer protection department in my state) because of the misleading statements made by Apple. She said that’s good and she hopes I get the outcome I want.
I file the complaint. It goes to a complaints and compliance officer named Sharron (thanks, Sharron!). I spoke with Sharon today and she told me Apple Australia passed her through 6 different people before the complaint ended up on the desk of the Vice President of Executive Relations oat Apple Australia. This woman conceded in agreeing to replace my phone at no additional charge.
Sharron said that in situations like this large companies will replace the item in the hopes that the consumer won’t make a scene. But I’m making a scene, because I beat Apple and their shitty selective warranty clauses.
I’m glad Australia has strong consumer protections laws that we have because there is no way in hell I would be paying an addition $600 for my phone. No phone is worth AUD$2200.
And for any other Australians here who feel like they’ve been slighted by Apple and their selective warranty clauses then I suggest you gather your evidence and lodge an official complaint.
edit I have no ill will towards Apple. I love their products. I have a Watch, an iMac, a MacBook Pro, Apple TV, and a very old unused iPad.
I just didn’t agree with their bullshit policy. Don’t make a claim if you aren’t going to cover it when things go wrong. Yes, I understand that the seal can degrade over time, but 6 weeks? Come on.

Huawei deletes images downloaded from Twitter
Just read a post from a local (Hong Kong) forum saying that a China user using a Huawei phone got his image downloaded from Twitter automatically deleted by the OS.
Doesn't it means that Huawei got backdoor on the user's phone? Probably they have to verify image/checksum with their own (China) server's to do it. Probably why US Government ban their products.
