Are certain websites abusing cookie policy and "forcing" users to accept advertising cookies?

GDPR kicked in a while ago now and as a resident of the EEA I have had the option to reject tracking cookies. As most of you know, most websites will ask you to either Accept Cookies or "manage cookies" whereby you can reject certain cookies based on purpose.

As a rule, I take the time to opt out of advertising tracking. I don't mind advertising - I just don't want to be profiled and tracked by them - as is my right as a European resident. Some sites forward you to third-parties to register your choices such as http://youronlinechoices.eu/ or https://www.youradchoices.com/ where I have previously registered my choices.

Now here's the problem - even after registering your choices, some sites simply keep the "Accept" cookies banner live in what appears to be an attempt to force you to override your choices and accept advertising cookies. An example is the Vox network. this is after registering my opt-out:

All of the sites in their network are like this. I contacted the webmasters weeks ago but never got a response so I guess they're aware of it and it's by design.

Does anyone know if this is compliant and how widespread the practice is? Are there ways to circumvent this?

Personally, I've actually stopped using websites that do this but am worried it may become more widespread.

28yo playing games with 10yo got me deep thinking...

A few days ago, i was playing some rocket league and destroyed the other team, i got a random party invite, i usually ignore these but this time i decided to bite. Low and behold it was the team i just beat, and it was a few 10-12 year old kids. I ended up getting on mic with them and decided to help them out for a bit.

I dont have any kids of my own, so playing games with young kids got me thinking about lots of stuff. It was almost refreshing at how innocent they were, naive and nonsensical, but completely passionate and genuinely excited to play video games, something thats kinda faded in me over 20 years of gaming. They were pretty funny too, seeing them freak out when they miss shots or blame each other had me laughing. It really reminded me of my youth when i used to be so excited for games and had no responsibilities and could dedicate 99.9% of my time to just gaming.

A few things i quickly realized is that they flock to all the free to play games, obviously because they're kids and they'll take any handouts they can get. They tried to get me to play some fortnite, which i reluctantly agreed to try, but i warned them that im not great at it, im avid in shooters and pretty much any type of game, but after playing some fortnite with them, i quickly realized that game is definitely not a skilled shooter. So in hindsight, if you really dont enjoy playing games that get flooded with kids, stay away from free to play games lol.

All in all, they respect me, they say im the nicest old guy they've met online. They say all the other kids and teenagers are so mean and get mad at them. It makes me feel sorry because, in the time i grew up, online multiplayer didnt exist until ps2/xbox era where halo 3 was the fortnite of my youth. It sucks to see kids fighting among each other not realizing that as they age, they will see their perspectives of the world change and increase, maturity will bring more reason to their minds and as i sit here laughing at them, hopefully one day they'll see why. Kids take things very seriously and as fact, i often find myself having to explain jokes to them, or sarcasm. I think they are lucky to grow up playing games with online play already in existence, but i also wish they knew how much fun actually playing couch coop could be as well, there are some things online multi just cant beat.

These kids got good hearts though, as annoying as they can be sometimes, they are just kids like we all once were just as excited to play games and taking the time to play some games with them has definitely helped give me a better perspective. I ended up buying two of the kids psplus for 1 month as a friendly gift, they were so happy.

The developer KABAM is responsible for allowing cheating and bribing to run rampant in Marvel Contest of champions. This needs attention.

This is EA/battlefront 2 all over again.

TLDR: the developer of the popular mobile game contest of champions has had contact with in game alliances and refuses to stop them paying out massive sums (<$1000) to allow them to remain in the top spot, this combined with players using other players accounts (called piloting) to play for them creates a hostile environment for OG and new players alike. The devs need to be punished, just like EA was. It’s our job as consumers to make sure shit like this doesn’t go unnoticed.

Please help me spread the news and punish devs like this

The developer KABAM is responsible for allowing major alliances in marvel contest of champions to pay sums of $2000 per war in order to win. This alliance bribes their way to the top, paying out sums upwards of $1000 frequently, and at times sending money for, or just straight up sending ipads.

The alliance also regularly has a few people sign into others accounts, allowing everyone to reap rewards they didn’t earn. This is highly unethical, and illegal behavior in game and needs to be brought to light.

r/contestofchampions has many posts right now showing proof of these actions, this post shows chats between the alliance and people they’re going against, bribing them into letting them win, and then one guy talking about communications with KABAM, the developer of the game.

It’s unacceptable for a developer to allow such actions that hurt longtime, loyal players, please help me and the rest of the community by spreading the news and forcing KABAM to make a statement. I understand this is mobile gaming, but just like EA with battlefront 2, a dev is taking advantage of its player base, and needs to be exposed for its wrong doing, so please help me and the community of r/contestofchampions by spreading the word!

After six years of legal battle with the federal government, we've finally - somehow - won. The war on magnetic spheres is over. Last week, a Colorado Judge reversed a recall decision in our favor. Wanted to drop a big thanks for all the support we've received from the reddit community.

It's been a minute since our last update, so here's a summary: we sell shiny ultra-precise neodymium magnets balls that are fun, but are bad for your health if ingested.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission was bent on getting Zen Magnets and Neoballs off the market because they are a hazard to children, even though we never sold them as kids toys. We got sued for a mandatory recall, while at the same time the CPSC banned the entire product category nationwide for all ages. Every other US company settled or stopped selling, including the Buckyballs company.

As a rule of thumb, brawling a deep pocketed Federal Agency is an exercise in futility. "Fuck it, we'll sleep with less regret," or so we thought. Because magnets are perfectly safe if not ingested, and the right to read warnings was worth standing up for. Oh, and the CPSC lied about the injury data. (Worst case scenario, [f]unemployment means the steam library gets more attention ~_~) Admittedly, really wanted to see the CPSC lose.

Three simultaneous lawsuits, multiple near-insolvencies, 500 pounds of oven burnt magnets, and a blizzard of legal motions later, we've come out the other end scathed but alive - and as enthusiastic as ever. We've had more success fighting the CPSC than any company in 33 years, by a long shot and have made it this far in no small part due to the redditors that have supported us financially and morally, for whom we feel so much appreciation. THANK YOU!!

Obligatory 'this happened a few years ago'.

Let me introduce myself to you, as I was about 4-5 years ago.

I was 12, the 'weird kid'/'most likely to shoot up the school'/'incel' and still had a deep respect for authority and believed in reporting wrongdoing to school authorities. I was a freshie to the world of secondary education, which may explain my behaviors. Because I was weird, I was bullied. Being the weird kid, I carried a stash of pebbles/rocks in my backpack at all times in anticipation of an event where I'd have to use them to escape or for some other ridiculous fashion. I also had no friends ~~same as today~~ and thus wanted to be friends with anyone and everyone who talked to me. I was also hugely fond of spies and all that shit.

So now I've set the details; let's get into the story.

My school is a snotty private school. According to the majority of parents in the city where I live, this school is the best in the city, no questions asked. I'd been transferred here in Year 4/Grade 3 and joined Secondary in due time, in Year 7. I was still innocent and was the classroom snitch. I snitched on everyone, for minor offenses like pushing a kid in the playground, to camping out in the bathroom to bunk a lesson. My reputation was that, as I'd earned it.

When I came into Secondary, there was talk about the elusive 'smokers' that would haunt the bathrooms. The smell of tobacco was prevalent in the bathrooms at all times of day. If they got a bit careless, they left the butts floating in the toilet, ash around the floor etc. At the same time, they were smart, opening windows and taping smoke detectors up.

I became friends with a fellow nerd/wimp who was into spies and investigation, just like me. Together, for some reason, we resolved to catch whoever the 'Bathroom smokers' were and report them. By doing this and cornering the elusive wrongdoers even the school management could not catch, we anticipated being welcomed as heroes, getting girls (as well as boys in my case) and have careers as prefects and student leadership guaranteed.

So, we read from the 'Spy's field-work manual' (yes, it was a real book!) and set up watch and built crappy gadgets to catch the smokers red-handed. We did things like taping my phone onto the ceiling above the stall and watching it through remote footage through a computer, investigating and interrogating 'witnesses' (who probably BSed through the entire thing) and being 'incognito' and staking out in the bathrooms during break and lunch.

Eventually, we had enough evidence to present to our pastoral deputy head. We had names, references and signed affadits from 'witnesses', discarded butts, videos of those kids lighting up and smoking and the like. So like proud tigers, we went to the pastoral head's office and gave him a USB of all of our findings plus a baggie with the butts and discarded packets. He was obviously curious and shocked that we'd gone through that much effort to catch a bunch of smokers in the bathroom. We smirked and told him that we had a sense of right and justice and thus it was our responsibility as fellow students to bring him in (I know, we sounded like cops in a C-grade cop film).

The next morning, we came in and started bragging about how we'd caught seniors red handed. We told pretty much everyone and I gotta say, few were as impressed or as amazed as we were. But this is where the fun ends.

I left school through the back entrance, where the smoking seniors had gotten word that it was *me* alone who had reported them. They were pissed af, obviously. Chances are that they had been suspended or given severe detentions or something. And so they chased me, intent on beating me up. As I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, I chucked the pebbles I kept in my bag to deter my aggressors.

Eventually I got home safely. But the nightmare was not over. I had to eventually start hiding in plain sight from that day on until they graduated so as to avoid having those guys fuck me up.

TL;DR ~ Reported smoking seniors, spent ridiculous amounts of effort and time trying to gather evidence to clinch the bastards, bragged a bit too early and had to make a daring escape from them as they tried to beat me up on the walk back home.

Overall: A fun little conference that was completely free from bloated PR talks and only focused on games (except for the brief segment from Acer). Both of the hosts were great and took any slip ups in stride. Only complaint really is how long it was. And since it's the PC Gaming show, there aren't any massive title reveals, but that's to be expected.

Favorite Moments

Good to hear more about The Sinking City. I really want a new Lovecraftian game.
Man Eater; You play as a shark who eats people and its an open world RPG. It's crazy enough that it might work.
Genesis Alpha One sounds really awesome. Definitely on my radar.
Two Point Hospital looks like a fun twist on the building/management genre. Plus, the host perfectly handled the mic not working situation.
Rapture Rejects; I'm a sucker for Cyanide and Happiness. The really funny trailer grabbed me.
