[RANT] No, website owner, I do ***NOT*** want to subscribe to your shitty newsletter, receive updates on your product, get notified about the latest bullshit, or even click on the x to make your shitty popup go away!!!

It seems like this has become the shitty thing du jour on websites, and only in the last few weeks.

One website in three that I go to will throw a popup at me saying "GIVE US YOUR EMAIL AND SUBSCRIBE!" I don't care if you're a car company, a computer store, some random newspaper in Westphalia. No no no, I don't want to subscribe to anything. Piss off! For every one subscriber you get (which probably won't translate to sales anyways), you probably have just pissed off and driven away ten more potential customers.

How can anyone think this is a good idea? Even the generic excuse of "bean counters" doesn't hold water, because PISSING OFF POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS IS NOT A GOOD BUSINESS MODEL!

This isn't stictly a technology problem, but it's absolutely a system misuse of technology and it's getting worse.

Grrrr!
