TIL the reason Sid Meiers name is on all his video games was because Robin Williams told the co founder of Micropose, Bill Stealey, "Bill, you should put Sid's name on a couple of these boxes, and promote him as the star.' And that's how Sid's name got on Pirates, and Civilization" as a joke.

Morocco Bans WhatsApp, Skype, Viber and Other Services Providing Mobile Internet Calls
All three telecommunication service providers in Morocco have blocked free mobile internet calls in a sudden and unexpected move.
The block, which covers applications such as Skype, Viber, Facebook and WhatsApp calls, has been criticized by social media users across the country who have accused telecommunication service providers of being greedy.
Maroc Telecom, Meditel, and Inwi cut Voice over IP (VoIP) services without any notice in what has been described by one Moroccan columnist as a “legal” but “irrational and backward step”.
Morocco’s Telecommunications Regulatory National Agency (ANRT) said that none of the products providing VoIP or other ‘free internet calls’ had the required licenses.
“In addition of the losses for the telecoms national market, the free internet voice calls do not respond to the required legal gateway,” said ANRT in a statement on Thursday evening.
“Their suspension (VoIP) came in conformity with the operators’ obligations that were underlined in their licences.”
There are 10 million internet users in Morocco with Skype, WhatsApp and Viber being among the most used applications in the country.

Netflix has blocked the use of VPNs in Spain and other European countries
Since yesterday, using a VPN while accesing Netflix will cause an error (M7111-1331-5059) and a message saying you must disable it in order to watch content.
I'm personally considering cancelling my Netflix subscription since 90% of the content I watch isn't available in my country.
We all knew Netflix is against the use of VPNs but until now it was possible (and very easy) to use one without trouble.
What do you think of this? Is there a workaround? Other countries affected?

I got banned from CoD on PC for using a flashbang.
Hi /r/gaming,
On February 19th I was playing MW3 on my new gaming PC when I joined a game of Domination on the map Dome. I was using the perk Recon, which allows you to see the direction enemies are facing on the map if they get hit by an explosive or bullet damage. I was using a strategy where I would throw a flashbang straight into the air, and due to the large blast radius, 3 or 4 enemies would be tagged on the map when it detonated. It was about halfway through the game when I was accused of wallhacking.
A player on the opposing team (lets call him George) was spewing obscenities and accusations saying that I could see through walls. I guess he wasn't wrong, but there was no use of third-party software that allowed me to do so. The next game, I do not see George anywhere on the playerlist, however I do see the Twitter username of a college page I co-run. I kill said player and recognize the callsign and emblem to be the same as George. The player hasn't said anything this far into the match. And then: http://ift.tt/1QF1mNH
So George has somehow managed to find my Twitter. He then changes his name to @(mypersonaltwitter), and starts posting all my info such as my city/college/real full name. I just brush it off and don't think much of it other than the fact that I obviously made someone mad at a video game and that he can't do much more. He quits the next game and I play a few more rounds before quitting out. When I close the game I see that I have an invite to a Steam group. The group picture is the picture I use for my twitter, it has been named after my Steam name at the time, and there are links to my personal and college twitter. Group members have also claimed to report me for hacking. Here's the group: http://ift.tt/1mYb1kD
I thought "So what, Steam reports do nothing". I didn't play for a couple days and when I tried playing MW2, it wouldn't load me into a game. I just thought maybe there wasn't enough people playing. Then I booted up MW3 and tried to get into a game. Unable to connect to host. Unable to connect to host. Unable to connect to host. I joined my friends lobby no problem, but when he tried to connect to a game I was kicked out but he connected fine.
So yeah. I had purchased this computer so I could actually run FPS games on high graphics, and right away 2 of them are now unplayable. Thanks George. I'm sorry I killed you.

When buying a new or used computer, ALWAYS check that Computrace is not enabled.
Anytime you buy a new or used Windows computers or Windows based tablet, one of the first things you should check is to make sure the Computrace feature was never turned on in the BIOS, unlike other asset tracking tools, once Computrace is turned on, it can never be turned off. Reinstalling the OS, refreshing the BIOS, nothing will work to get rid of it.
Apple computers do not run Computrace.
Computrace is often described as the LoJack of Laptops, here is more information about the application http://ift.tt/1Q7AT9l
If you value your privacy, this is NOT a backdoor feature you want turned on in your computer. Even if you are not subscribed to the service, the device is always calling home, the agent that is forces on your Operating System can copy files, run key loggers and other features like that. Package is still forced on your PC as long as Computrace is enabled in bios, even if you are not subscribed to it.
Just like any backdoor, it is adding vulnerabilities to your system, there is already multiple recent documented vulnerabilities with Computrace, worst of all is that all AntiVirus have this rootkit whitelisted.
I have heard of people saying their new computers came with Computrace enabled, I have not experienced this but I always check.
But recently I purchased a used computer, I had reinstalled the Windows OS to get rid of all the junk that comes with the Manufactures Installed Windows, but as I was going through the settings I realized that the Computrace was enabled. I was about return the computer when I also realized that the motherboard was faulty, computer had warranty and I could get the motherboard replaced locally, so now I got the new motherboard with Computrace disabled. I did have to format and reinstall the entire OS since its the only way to get rid of the Rootkit (Of course, you need Computrace disabled for the Rootkit to not be forced into the OS again).
Yes, yes… I know “if you value your privacy then why are you using Windows?”. I needed a full Windows desktop to do some testing that would not work on a Virtual Machine.

There was a congressional hearing about encryption backdoors last april. And it was beautiful.
Full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG0bUmuj4tg
I think it's important to recognize the people who've been fighting this fight for a while now. I post this video whenever I can. I made the following comment after someone asked me about it, and I think it might explain a boring 2hr congressional hearing that really is fantastic to watch:
It's a congressional committee on technology. The FBI is petitioning them to allow a law to be passed so they sent a lawyer. She gets to go first: https://youtu.be/YG0bUmuj4tg?t=1373
She lays out her argument as to why they want the law passed. To show support for the FBI, Mr. Conley is second. He's a DA from Boston and represents the national DA association. He takes his best shot: https://youtu.be/YG0bUmuj4tg?t=1689
Then they hear from a lineup of people from the tech industry and privacy advocates who are against the law. They each get 10min or so for prepared remarks as well, and it's 30min of 4 or 5 reasons that each by themselves would make this a bad idea.
Then the politicians get a chance to ask questions of the petitioners. But these politicians are on the technology committee know what's up and it quickly turns into them laying into the FBI lawyer and the DA representative about bulk data collection and privacy laying bare the issues at hand. The first session is pretty tame by comparison. The 2nd session opens up with Rep. Ted Lieu, and he's clearly pissed: https://youtu.be/YG0bUmuj4tg?t=5203
Mr. Blum is cool. He's not that mad, makes sure to tip his hat to his law enforcement supporters, then makes a great analogy comparing their request to a home builder installing cameras in a home and promising to never turn them on: https://youtu.be/YG0bUmuj4tg?t=5483
But it's long. So people tend to not spend the time attending/watching them.

Just a reminder for those who are fired up and on Apple's side about their notice regarding the government backdoor: you can support the EFF (they have similar principles) by using smile.amazon.com when you shop at Amazon at no cost to you
smile.amazon.com allows you to choose a charity that you would like to get a donation (0.5% of your order amount) when you buy from amazon. It doesn't increase your order amount. Info here: http://ift.tt/1lIjCIi

H1Z1 Splits into two games today, both valued at 19.99 USD on Steam. This marks the first time that a game has introduced micro transactions and doubled in price before Alpha concludes.
For those of you that don't know, H1Z1 is a MMO survival game comparable to DayZ. H1Z1 includes a side game mode called Battle Royale, where more than 100 players fight until only one remains.
Within the past couple of months, the devs at Daybreak Games announced that H1Z1 would split into two games. H1Z1: Just Survive, and H1Z1: King of the Hill. The original version of H1Z1 cost 19.99 on Steam, and with this update each installment will cost 19.99.
Daybreak also introduced in-game purchases similar to Counter Strike: Global Offensive a number of months back. Players can buy "Daybreak Points", a non-transferable internet currency that can be used to purchase keys to open crates dropped in game. The items received in the crates cannot be sold on the Steam Community market, but do remain in your steam inventory. Daybreak announced that players will only be able to use their skins in the version of the game that they acquired them in.
All of these changes have taken place while the game is still in Alpha. There are outstanding game breaking bugs and heavy optimization that has yet to be performed. Daybreak has announced that the release of two separate games means that there will be two dev teams working on their version of the game, but the community is skeptical.
I just wanted to put this out there, regardless of the response it might provoke. I personally feel like this is getting out of control, and it's companies like Daybreak Games that are taking advantage of their customers.

TIFU by thinking I'm a special snowflake and by going out naked.
Unlike most of the fuck ups that I usually read about on here, this one actually happened today.
However, To fully understand the significance of this fuck up, I must go back several months and begin from the evening of 29th September 2015, what a glorious day that was. For those of you who are out of the loop (or are normal) this for you was a completely insignificant, average day. But not to me. Oh no, to (the gadget loving, technology nerd) me this was the day I had been looking forward to all year, this was the moment I had been dreaming and fantasising about for a very long time, this was finally the day Google was going to announce their new Nexus phones. I wanted this day to come more than I wanted my next breath. I remember anxiously waiting and constantly hitting the refresh button on the YouTube page, hoping and praying the stream would start working so the event can begin. After what seemed like an eternity it begins, and my word what a show it was. Never before or since have I ever even seen a Porno that was as boner inducing as this event was. The 90 minute programme was pure joy and went by in the flash of an eye and by the end of it I was speechless. You know when you've bigged up something in your mind for ages, and because of this there's no way it can possibly live up to your expectations. Well this was different, not only was this as good as I was expecting it to be, but a few unexpected features made it better beyond my wildest dreams. I was in love.
The second the preorders opened I was on the site like a madman trying to beat the queues to place an order, so I would have the honour of being amongst the very first lucky ones to get their hands on this majestic beast. (you think Apple fanboys are bad, you've obviously never met a Nexus one) But disaster, the gold version 6P I had been lusting over will not be coming to the UK, in fact it will only be available in Japan. "Damn those Japanese, what do they have that I don't?" I thought to myself. Heartbroken, I decide to order the aluminium version thinking it'll be good enough, kind of like how when you get stuck with that chubby girl who's really funny and sweet but not the most attractive looking on a night out. It's not what I came for, but I could do a lot worse. Besides it's what's on the inside that really counts. It just wasn't my day. I placed the order and thought the matter had been closed.
But no, a couple of weeks later a friend ITK informed me that demand for the gold version is so high Google will actually be bringing it to the UK afterall, but it will not be here for several months yet. The dilemma I was in was unbelievable, it was a bit like choosing between 2 guys and deciding which of them gets to steal my wife. Either choice had a lot of pain attached to it. I barely ate or slept for days. After a lot of deliberation, I decided to go with my heart and decided to wait for the gold version. As Biggie Smalls put it: "Only make moves if your heart's in it".
The next few months where amongst the longest and most difficult I have ever experienced in my short 21 year life. The constant waiting was eating me up, and seeing other countries such as India and the US getting theirs before me almost made me mad. Why them?. I decided it wasn't healthy for me to visit r/nexus6p anymore as I was always leaving that subreddit hating my nexus free life. This decision was a wise move as it made the waiting a lot more bareable, but the pain was always there each and every time I used my oneplus one (a fine phone in its own right, but it wasn't the 6P). Several weeks later I received a notification on my phone stating that I had been mentioned in a post by one of the regular ITK posters from /nexus6p (this guy may aswell be a fucking prophet). I click on the link and the joy I felt as I read the title: "Gold Nexus 6P out in the UK" was indescribable. I instantly order the gold 64gb version and do my victory dance (that is unsurprisingly performed whilst naked) to celebrate the joy that is about to come into my life. After months of disappointments, pain and impatiently waiting for the gold Nexus 6P to be finally released in the UK, mine was finally on its way. For some reason the final days were the longest, each day felt like a week at this point. (much like this post probably does, but trust me It's about to end)
I finally received mine yesterday and holy cow it is beautiful. In my haste to order I forget to order a case and later decided not to buy a case for it as the gold is an absolutely stunning shade. Seriously if you like gold things, I promise you, there is a 100% chance you'll get an erection when you first see this... Especially if you're a girl. Holding this phone for the first time felt as good as (I imagine) it feels to hold your first child for the first time. I promised myself that I would be "extra careful" this time, since my history with keeping phones safe isn't exactly confidence inspiring. To say I am clumsy would be like saying Ray Charles had 20/30 vision or that James May occasionally needs to look at a map. Below is a list of phones and the things I've damaged on them.
Nexus 4, smashed back and screen
iPhone 5 smashed screen
Nexus 6 smashed screen x2
Oneplus one, every corner of the bezel severely dented. Camera no longer worked due to drops.
But not this time I thought to myself, I am a changed person, I am a young, intelligent, sophisticated man that is in control of my own destiny. Just as long as I take extra care and be careful, What could possibly go wrong?
This brings me to this morning, I am late to uni (as I am most days) and I am running to my car with my laptop bag in one hand, my car keys, my phone (the new Nexus 6P) and a book in the other. I attempt to put my naked phone in my coats inside pocket so I can unlock my car's doors easier. An easy task that I probably do at least twice a day, especially if I had the time to think it through. But I miss the coats pocket and I release the phone from a height of about 5.5 feet. "Splat!!", I hear the very familiar sound that I dread to hear, the sound I've heard so often before and my heart sinks instantly knowing what just happened. I slowly bend down praying and begging "please don't let it broken" but I know the damage had already been done. I look down and see that it landed on its back. Oh great I think to myself, the screens not broken. But fate can be a very cruel mistress, I turn the phone over and the once beautiful golden back has got several very deep marks and dents in it, especially around the corners. It's over, it's beauty was only meant to last less than 24 hours in my hands. After literally waiting months for the gold Nexus 6P, it's in my destiny to never show off its beauty. Seeing this sight and having this realisation, I weep as if I've lost a loved one.
TLDR: I learnt to never leave your house naked, danger and pain can strike at any time, Yes it can happen to YOU again.
