TIFU by not following the safety instructions on my new Mandolin

(This happened Saturday not today)

So a couple weeks ago I got a new Mandolin. I was super excited to cook with it. I love cooking and a new gadget is always fun. I saw this dish on r/GifRecipes that was perfect, this thin slice potato dish.

So I bust it out and I'm slicing up a storm on these potatoes. There is an attachment on the mandolin where you stick whatever you are cutting and you're only supposed to hold the attachment as you slide the food up and down the board. I noticed after a few potatoes that the stub that was left was bigger than the slices, too big to use for this particular dish.

So on about potato four or so I decided that i would manually slide to the stub down so as to not waste any potato. This was a mistake.

I slide the stub down and it slices in half like butter. I immediately notice that something feels off however. I look down and there is blood running down my arm coming from my thumb. I barely even felt the cut the blade on the Mandolin was so sharp.

I rinse it off and try to stop the bleeding with some paper towels but it just won't stop. After a second rinse I try to investigate just how bad it is and I can't even see the cut the blood is swelling up so fast. No matter what I try I can't stop the bleeding.

I realize I'm going to need medical attention so I go to cover the already cut potatoes with a wet paper towel so they'll be freshish when I get home and I can finish cooking the dish. This is when I see my thumbpad sitting on the potatoes. I sliced it right off.

On the plus side after getting home from the ER I finished the dish (I had been really looking forward to making it...) and it came out great.

TL;DR I misused my Mandolin and sliced off my thumbpad.
