Warning for net neutrality day of action: don't point traffic directly at the FCC's website. It is unreliable and has crashed repeatedly. Use a site like BattleForTheNet.com that stores and queues comments and ensures that they get submitted even if the FCC's site goes down.
The title basically says it all. If you're participating in the Internet-Wide Day of Action for Net Neutrality and planning to use one of the widgets on your website or blog, or help drive traffic on social media or from a Twitch, Vimeo, or YouTube channel, I strongly encourage you NOT to point people directly to the FCC.gov website.
My organization, Fight for the Future, has been involved in raising awareness about net neutrality since before the last round of this fight in 2014-2015. Together with our partners we've helped deliver millions of comments to the FCC. Over the years, we've seen the FCC website crash repeatedly under even moderate traffic. More recently, they claimed they experienced a DDoS attack at the exact moment that large numbers of people would have been attempting to comment following the John Oliver segment.
The fact is, the FCC's site just isn't reliable. If you want to make 100% sure that your comment will end up in the docket, use one of the sites set up by public interest groups that store and queue comments to ensure that they get submitted even if the FCC's site crashes.
Here are two options: https:/http://ift.tt/W3YoYi -- run by the broad coalition behind the July 12 day of action, also allows users to call and email their lawmakers, which is an important part of the strategy for winning net neutrality. https://dearfcc.org/ -- run by our friends at the EFF.
If you want to build something yourself, that's cool too, but the bottom line is if anyone points significant traffic at the FCC's site on July 12, it will probably fall apart, so use one of these resources instead to make sure that every voice gets heard.

PornHub, OK Cupid, Imgur, DuckDuckGo, Namecheap, Bittorrent, and a bunch of other big sites have joined the Internet-Wide Day of Action for Net Neutrality on July 12 (Amazon, Kickstarter, Etsy, Mozilla, and Reddit were already on board.)
Hey reddit, I wanted to give a quick update on the Internet-Wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality that lots of us are planning for July 12th.
There's a huge amount of momentum. This morning PornHub (with 75 million daily visitors) announced that they will be participating. Since we announced earlier this month a ton of other high-traffic sites have signed on including Imgur, Amazon, Namecheap, OK Cupid, Bittorrent, Mozilla, Kickstarter, Etsy, GitHub, Vimeo, Chess.com, Fark, Checkout.com, Y Combinator, and Private Internet Access.
Reddit itself has also joined, along with more than 30 subreddits!
Net neutrality is the basic principle that prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast and Verizon from charging us extra fees to access the content we want -- or throttling, blocking, and censoring websites and apps. Title II is the legal framework for net neutrality, and the FCC is trying to get rid of it, under immense pressure for the Cable lobby.
This day of action is an incredibly important moment for the Internet to come together -- across political lines -- and show that we don't want our Cable companies controlling what we can do online, or picking winners and losers when it comes to streaming services, games, and online content.
The current FCC chairman, Ajit Pai, is a former Verizon lawyer and seems intent on getting rid of net neutrality and misleading the public about it. But the FCC has to answer to Congress. If we can create another moment of massive online protest like the SOPA Blackout and the Internet Slowdown, we have a real chance of stopping the FCC in its tracks, and protecting the Internet as a free and open platform for creativity, innovation, and exchange of ideas.
So! If you've got a website, blog, Tumblr, or any kind of social media following, or if you are a subreddit mod or active in an online community or forum, please get involved! There's so much we as redditors can do, from blacking out our sites to drive emails and phone calls to organizing in-person meetings with our lawmakers. Feel free to message me directly or email team (at) fightforthefuture (dot) org to get involved, and learn more here.
EDIT: Oh hai, everyone! Very glad you're here. Lots of awesome brainstorming happening in the comments. Keep it coming. A lot of people are asking what sites will be doing on July 12. We're still encouraging brainstorming and creativity, but the basic idea is that sites will have a few options of things they can do to their homepage to show what the web would be like without net neutrality, ie a slow loading icon to show they are stuck in the slow lane, a "site blocked" message to show they could be censored, or an "upgrade your Internet service to access this site" fake paywall to show how we could be charged special fees to access content. Love all your ideas! Keep sharing, and go here for more info about the protest.
EDIT 2: It's worth noting that given the current chairman of the FCC's political orientation, it's extra important that conservatives, libertarians, and others to the right of center speak out on this issue. The cable lobby is working super hard to turn this technological issue into a partisan circus. We can't let them. Net neutrality protects free speech, free markets, innovation, and economic opportunity. We need people and sites from all across the political spectrum to be part of this.

Leaked documents show that CIA 'ELSA' implant geolocates laptops and desktops by intercepting the surrounding WiFi signals
Press release:
Today, June 28th 2017, WikiLeaks publishes documents from the ELSA project of the CIA. ELSA is a geo-location malware for WiFi-enabled devices like laptops running the Micorosoft Windows operating system. Once persistently installed on a target machine using separate CIA exploits, the malware scans visible WiFi access points and records the ESS identifier, MAC address and signal strength at regular intervals. To perform the data collection the target machine does not have to be online or connected to an access point; it only needs to be running with an enabled WiFi device. If it is connected to the internet, the malware automatically tries to use public geo-location databases from Google or Microsoft to resolve the position of the device and stores the longitude and latitude data along with the timestamp. The collected access point/geo-location information is stored in encrypted form on the device for later exfiltration. The malware itself does not beacon this data to a CIA back-end; instead the operator must actively retrieve the log file from the device - again using separate CIA exploits and backdoors.
The ELSA project allows the customization of the implant to match the target environment and operational objectives like sampling interval, maximum size of the logfile and invocation/persistence method. Additional back-end software (again using public geo-location databases from Google and Microsoft) converts unprocessed access point information from exfiltrated logfiles to geo-location data to create a tracking profile of the target device.
Links:
Press release link: http://ift.tt/2uhY89w
Documents (html): http://ift.tt/2sQk3qk
Documents (download): http://ift.tt/2sQwN0g
Here's TL;DR of document (it's copied from r/hacking thread)
I read a couple of pages in the manual. Apparently the ELSA client is designed to be injected as a dll into an existing process, it's designed to run on machines running both 32 and 64 versions of Windows 7. Once it's injected, an encrypted log file is created but not sent to the operator, to get the log file you have to go get it using a backdoor. Also, the log files deletes older entries (locations) to make place for new ones. The operator has to setup the dll before injecting into the target. Here's how it's used:
-
The operator configures the ELSA implant based on the target.
-
The operator deploys the implant to the target and begins collection.
-
The implant begins collecting WiFi access points based on the set schedule.
-
The implant resolves WiFi data to a geolocation via the 3rd party database if it's configured to do so.
-
The operator then connects to the target host to collect the encrypted log file.
-
The operator then decrypt the log and analyze it.

TIFU by not paying super close attention at work today.
This happened yesterday. I work at a bakery that, in addition to bread, also sells drinks. Behind our counter we have a bar setup with tea dispensers, shakers, and the whole assortment; including a sealer that takes in plastic cups and uses an extremely hot ring to press down a plastic covering onto the cup thus sealing it (If you don't know what it looks like google "drink sealer", some images will come up) On the same table the sealer sits on, we have multiple appliances like a portable stove, and each of these appliances has their cord plugged into an extension cord nearby. Some of our appliances we keep stowed away and only bring them out when we need them.
Onto the tifu part. After taking my 10 min break, I come back to the front to help out. My coworker tells me to help seal a couple of drinks that were just made and send them out. Of course I rush over to help as I've done this a hundred times. Put the drink in the cup, sealer will seal it, check for leaks and send it out. So I naturally place the drink in but this time sparks fly out and a large pop noise is heard in the store. Of course I'm frightened by this flamboyant extra step I never knew about (When do drinks ever explode into sparks) so I yell out "SHIT". At this point the whole store is dead quiet and staring at me. I look down at the machine and in a sort of comical way, the sealer pushes out the drink normally as if an explosion hadn't just occurred and to my surprise, I see a piece of cord stuck between the plastic covering and the cup. A cord from the kitchenaid mixer nearby had gotten inside the sealer right between where it comes down on the drink. The cord was not on the little holder where the drink was placed, otherwise i would have noticed the cord in the way, it snuck it's way inside. You know how when a thick cord is uncoiled from a loop it sort of bends and doesn't keep straight? The bend was inside the machine where i couldn't see it. The sealer came straight down and cut a piece of the cord cleanly. The mixer was plugged into the extension cord as well and i thinks thats why there were sparks flying. So of course i just broke a $260 mixer, but it doesn't end there. All of the appliances plugged into the extension cord don't work. At first i was worried i fried everything there, but it turns out the gadgets worked fine on other outlets. Next we had to move a fridge nearby hiding the outlet in order to see if I broke the entire outlet it was plugged into we tried multiple things but none worked. Shit, i just broke an outlet and now it needs repairs, which cost more money. Luckily we found out it had something to do with the electricity breakers if that makes sense. We just had to turn it back on and everything was fine, except of course the mixer. The owner of the store just happened to stop by to check while we had the fridge moved so I had to explain what I did, and what we were doing. Not fun, even if the owner wasn't visibly mad or anything, bless his soul. Anyways, the blame was also partly to be shared with the person who took out the mixer and placed it so that the cord was inside the mixer. I was just unlucky because I sealed it at the wrong time. Anyone else would have made the same mistake as me. But at that point it looked like my doing completely and I didn't want to drag someone else down with me like that. I ended up just taking the fall for it. With it I also took on a heap of guilt. So much unnecessary guilt. My managers kept telling me it was ok and tried to cheer me up by telling me "we needed a new mixer anyways" We already replaced the mixer with a brand new one. I'm already super self-conscious about how i perform at my job because I'm not good with memorizing drinks, and I also recently showed up 90 minutes late to my morning shift, leaving only one person to open the front of the store. For this to happen now is truly a sign that god hates me.
TL;DR: I put a drink inside a drink sealer without paying close attention, and cut the cord from a nearby $260 appliance cleanly, coupled with sparks flying out, a loud pop, and a surprised "SHIT". Guilt trip ensues despite everyone reassuring me it's ok. And I now wonder if my days being employed there are number due to other "mistakes" i've made before
Edit: i just had a dream last night about the owner finding this reddit post and firing me because of some sort of breach of privacy thing?

reddit, we're less than 3 weeks out from the big Internet-Wide Day of Action for Net Neutrality on July 12. Help us pick a nickname for it.
Hey reddit,
We’re now just a little more than two weeks out from the big Internet-Wide Day of Action for Net Neutrality planned for July 12th.
This thing has gained a ton of momentum, and we’ve already got a bunch of the most popular sites on the Internet on board including Twitter, Amazon, Etsy, Kickstarter, Netflix, Mozilla, Pornhub, Private Internet Access, Github, OK Cupid, Soundcloud, and Imgur. Plus, Reddit itself and more than 100 subreddits!
We’ve taken in a ton of the ideas that people have voiced in previous reddit threads and through email and have unveiled several examples of the types of messages that sites, forums, apps, and services can display on July 12. Companies and Internet users are going to take action by putting a prominent message in their sites and social media accounts to alert their audience about what’s at stake if we lose net neutrality, and what we can do about it before the FCC comment deadline. The goal is for every participant to do whatever the biggest thing they can do is that reaches as much of their audience as possible -- and directs people to where people can submit a comment to the FCC and Congress, like BattleForTheNet.com-
The plan is set. The code is being built. New people and sites are joining every day. Now there’s just one thing left. We need to know what we call this mass online protest! We've got some great ideas, but we want to know what will stick, i.e. what the Internet wants to call it.
We’ve kicked around a ton of ideas, and maybe it doesn’t need a name beyond “Internet-Wide Day of Action for Net Neutrality,” but we decided to open it up for more feedback and ideas from the Internet. So that’s where you come in. Please suggest ideas for names of the July 12 day of action in the comments, and note it by starting your comment with “PROPOSAL.” Then people can upvote names they like, and comment on them to suggest variations.
What makes a good name?
-
It clearly describes both the problem (what taking away net neutrality would do to the Internet) and the solution (what we are doing on July 12 in response.) -- For example the “SOPA Blackout” and the “Internet Slowdown.” The most important thing is that it makes it clear to people what they should do on that day to participate.
-
It’s short, one or two words, and also makes a good hashtag and headline for a page.
-
It’s accessible to a wide range of people, doesn’t use insider jargon or inside jokes or confusing terminology, and does not come off as partisan.
The ones that we’ve come up with so far are: Internet Shutdown, Break the Internet, The Slowpocalypse, Internet Day, and Internet Emergency.
We may end up having more than one “nickname” for the day of action, so feel free to go wild, get creative, and let’s come up with something to call this awesome thing that we are all doing together to defend the free and open Internet that we love. For more context about net neutrality in general and the day of action, see my previous update.

Porn Companies Tell Us Why the End of Net Neutrality Will Make Porn Boring
by evanFFTF http://ift.tt/2tSUeUh
Net neutrality day of action update: Twitter, Soundcloud, and Medium, have joined. Reddit, This could be as big as SOPA.
Hey reddit, I wanted to give another quick update on the Internet-Wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality planned for July 12th that tons of major websites, subreddits, online communities, and Internet users are helping organize.
The momentum is continuing to build. In the past few days Twitter, Soundcloud, Medium, Adblock, Twilio, and some other big names have joined.
Reddit itself has also joined, along with more than 80 subreddits!
We've started brainstorming ideas for the types of messages that sites can display on the day of the protest, and you can check those out here (feedback is welcome!)
Important context from my previous update below.
Net neutrality is the basic principle that prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast and Verizon from charging us extra fees to access the online content we want -- or throttling, blocking, and censoring websites and apps.

Got this response from Sen. Marco Rubio (FL) about my Net Neutrality email/call...
Dear Mr. TearsDontFall,
Thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts regarding the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) internet regulations commonly referred to as "net neutrality." Understanding your views helps me better represent Florida in the United States Senate, and I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
Since its inception, the internet has flourished with minimal government involvement and has revolutionized our ability to communicate and conduct commerce. It provides businesses with the ability to compete in the global marketplace and is an engine of economic growth. Continued development of the internet and modern telecommunications, free of excessive and overly burdensome government regulations, is key to American innovation.
On February 26, 2015, the FCC voted 3-2 to reclassify broadband as a telecommunications utility under Title II of the Communications Act. The 332-page regulation was called “net neutrality,” referencing the concept of preventing internet service providers (ISPs) from creating “fast lanes” and “slow lanes” for different content. This regulation effectively transferred power from ISPs to the federal government, and threatened to overregulate the Internet in a way that would make it more expensive for consumers, less innovative and less competitive.
On April 26, 2017, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to roll back the 2015 regulation. Chairman Pai is committed to an open and transparent process. As he explained, “two years ago, the FCC hid the Title II Order from the American people until after it had been adopted. Only certain special interest groups were given special access able to make major changes to it. The FCC had to pass the 313-page Order before the public was allowed to see what was in it. The process over the coming months will be open and transparent with a nearly three month open comment period. You may agree or disagree with the proposal, but you’ll be able to see exactly what it is.” On May 18, 2017 the FCC voted to make the NPRM official. The comment period will stay open until August 16th, at which point the commission will issue a final decision.
I believe modernizing the 1996 Communications Act should be a top priority for Congress, and would clarify the FCC's role in the modern communications landscape. Congress must create level regulatory playing field that protects consumers and encourages innovation.
It is an honor and a privilege to serve you as your United States Senator. I will keep your thoughts in mind as I consider these issues and continue working to ensure America remains a safe and prosperous nation.
Sincerely,
Marco Rubio
United States Senator
Each week I provide a weekly update on issues in Washington and ways in which my office can assist the people of Florida. Sign up here for updates on my legislative efforts, schedule of events throughout Florida, constituent services and much more.
- See bold lines above... He is saying that government regulation on not allowing ISP's to control what we have access to, would make it more expensive (probably told this by his stream of donations from Spectrum) and didn't he vote FOR the repeal so ISP's could make slow and fast lanes? So the second bold line... totally contradicts the first you dope!
